Session 8 - Program of Activities - September 24th

Remember our Twitter Hashtag is #aee311; Ag Teachers are responding to class info!

Our Guest Speaker Today was Ms. Jenna Genson from National FFA (jgenson@ffa.org; Twitter: @jgenson). The Recording can be found at: https://meeting.psu.edu/p7igly5u4f3/

Response to Ticket Out

What are you curious about?
  • Embedded course to Korea... Will there be a meeting in the fall about it?
    • I am going to toss this one to Dr. Foster... I am not sure of the plans for a meeting. I am sure there will be more information coming out through the Teach Ag Blast emails.
      • DR. FOSTER's Response: We will begin advertising next week for applications. At this time we anticipate 5 students from PSU being able to go.
  • How the schools in the "innovate" book thought of all of such creative ideas?
    • There are creative people out there! If you believe you are not creative, one of the best things you can do is team up with people that can be innovative/creative. It is a team effort in developing/implementing great ideas.
  • The report... Does everyone do this or just the "outstanding" chapters?
    • Everyone has the opportunity to complete the application, but it is your outstanding chapters that are selected/recognized.
      • Dr. Foster's Addition: the Forest Lake Annual Report is "above and beyond" and not required by states/schools, but how awesome would it be if more schools did that?
  • How are activities selected for POA (there are so many options)?
    • You need to work with your officers and members to address the activities that are important to your chapter. Choose what is right for your community and members.
  • How involved should the advisor be in creating the POA?
    • This can vary by the advisor, but my belief is that the advisor is here to guide the development of the POA. They are a sounding board for what may or may not work.
  • What makes an awesome FFA chapter?
    • An awesome FFA chapter is one that works to engage its members in the activities that help develop students' leadership capacity. It engages all of the students in some manner to make the chapter, school, and community better!
  • Why don't some schools have POA's?
    • If a school wants to be approved by the state for funding, they need to have some type of POA. With that said, some POA's are better than others, and those that are most effective are developed by the the student members, with the guidance of their advisor. Some schools may not have an effective POA, and this is not fair to the students that are part of the program.
  • How many chapters from PA have won National Awards for outstanding POA's?
  • I would very much like to see a version of the Willcox POA :-)
    • Dr. Foster???
      • Foster's Response: I will see if I can find it. I did have a Computer failure and lost some digital records.
  • For the POA, are we being graded or scored against a rubric?
    • Yes, there is a rubric. Double-check the assignment handbook.

What did you learn?
  • Show students other's success/ideas to get them excited about what they can do!
  • National application and how it can lead to awards.
  • POA/how to have a great chapter
  • POA's can be different from school to school.
  • That there is more than one award available at the national level.
  • S.M.A.R.T. Goals
  • Involve ALL students in the POA.
  • The structure of the POA and the basics that should be included.
  • That there is a difference between a POA and a calendar of events.
  • 15 quality standards.
  • Great tips!
  • How to re-assess the POA.

What do you want to learn more about?
  • For the officer selection plan - does a student advisor still take on the role as described online as an actual advisor does?
    • The student advisor does complete many of the tasks that advisor would complete. They work closely with the advisor to make sure they are completing the duties as described.
  • How do you decide that an activity fits into a certain category?
    • The activity has to be examined, and then the team decides how/where best the activity fits into the overall plan of the chapter. Some activities are easier to place, but the important part is to make certain that the activity is important and then placed into a category that makes sense, and that the members take ownership of that activity.
  • Ways to engage students in events?
    • You have to make sure that it is relevant to what the students want. Students need to "buy-in" to the event/activity or they will not be as invested in the event.
  • How much is too much for a POA?
    • This will vary by the number of members, and the amount of time that the members are willing/able to invest in making the POA function. The POA is "living" document and it needs to change to fit the chapter. The advisor has to help guide/balance how much the chapter can accomplish. Otherwise, there will be a lot on paper, but not much in action.
  • How to apply for the National Chapter Award?
  • I am still insecure about my ability to put together a POA.
  • How do students develop their own mindset of "running their own chapter"?
    • This goes back to the idea of student "buy-in". The students have to "own" the ideas or they are just implementing something that someone else has created, and then they are not motivated to make it a success.
  • How do we involve community members in the POA?
    • Make sure to take AEE 413! We talk a lot more about community partnerships and how to incorporate the community into the total program, not only the POA!
  • For assignment #2, does the lesson plan need to be written out word for word or just outline format and highlight the lesson?
    • The lesson does not need to be written out word for word, but there must be enough information to convey the content. You, as the instructor, must be able to utilize the plan. Keep in mind that as you first begin to teach, you need to make sure that you have enough description/guidance in your lesson that you go back to it when needed. I like to think of this as learning to drive... Ask me about my "10 and 2" example.
      • Foster's addition: A substitute should be able to pick up and teach the lesson.

Follow up to Session 7 Selecting Officers - September 17th

Response to Ticket Out

What are you curious about?
  • Do our activities for weekly web wonder #4 have to come from the two chapter that we got officer plans from?
    • No, you need to pick an example activity for each of the three divisions (Chapter, Community, Student) for a total of three example activities
  • Ideas for Officer Training
  • How I can take all of this information and put it together to make an officer selection plan
    • Deep purposeful thinking
  • Different officer selection plans
    • Look at the six examples provided in class, look at examples found by fellow classmembers in Web Wonder #2 and ask on NAAE CoP
  • Different Questions to be asked to officer candidates
    • Google and read on Behavior based interviewing.
  • Is there a chapter officer selection plan that involves both nom com and elections? What does that look like?
    • Yes, use nom com to determine eligible students (those who have the skills) and let students select actual officer through popular election.
  • What is Mr. Currie's job?
    • He currently manages the National FFA Officer Team.
  • When we are teachers, how can we bring guest speakers into our classroom via technology?
    • Adobe connect is a pay service, so that will probably not be available, but you could use Skype or Google Hangout. Work closely with your school IT professionals
  • How would you approach an advisor who does not use an officer selection process to try to display an opportunity for improvement?
    • Usually I recommend to lead by example, so show how it works well in your chapter/program. If you are not a teacher yet, you might offer to run it for them.
  • How much FFA dictates what you do in your personal life?
    • I do not understand the question. The FFA does not dictate your personal life, however, if you choose to seek out a position representing an entire group, your personal actions can have impact on the reputation of that group. This is not unique to FFA, sports, band, and other clubs have similar expectations for their members and leaders to represent them to the highest level in all aspects of their life. This is true in real life as well...if a politician "errs" in their personal life, their public position is harmed as well.
  • How do I get younger member involved when most of the leadership is upperclassmen?
    • It does not have to be. Create opportunities of leadership specifically for younger classmen, like Greenhand or Junior Officers or class delegates.
  • How do you you implement a budget for officers?
    • Like you would implement a budget for anything else.
  • How do officer selection plans effect the success of an officer team?
    • You want to make sure you get the right people in the right seats on the bus
  • What is a the time commitment of a National FFA officer?
    • Full time for one year. No School, No Work, nothing else but being an officer
  • FFA has global programs, how will AgriCorp connect with those existing programs?
    • AgriCorps is a program for post college graduates, not current FFA members.
  • I am curious about how varying officer team sizes affects the way the team works together through the year
    • Depends on the amount of work you have for them to do.

What did you learn?
  1. Effective ways to select Chapter FFA Officers
  2. Training and Development of Officers is essential
  3. Increasing capacity of our chapters through leadership development of members and officers
  4. Potential is important in selecting officers. Look for students who can grow and improve throughout the year.
  5. What a nominating committee was and how this can be a good tool for officer selection
  6. Different methods of electing officers including Nominating Committee, Popular Election and a mix
  7. Ropes Courses can be used a great team building activity
  8. Consider having someone else besides the Ag Teacher manage the Nominating Committee Process.
  9. How much thought goes into utilizing Chapter Officers
  10. Must be organized! Have officer binders, planners, shared constitution and time investment
  11. There are multiple ways to handle each situation. For example; in dealing with an officer removal, you may want to have a contract for them to sign but also there is opportunity for a point system implementation
  12. It is not advisable to have the same person be president multiple years.
What do you want to learn more about?
  • AgriCorp
  • Officer Training
    • Need you to be more specific to give better answers! Ask on NAAE CoP!
  • What do you think make a good chapter officer?
    • Desire
  • How do we involve everything in an FFA Chapter and keep them excited?
    • A POA goes a long way to help establish Student Ownership which leads to Student Excitement.
  • Committees and how to Organize them
    • Next Class Session with Ms. Gensen will help a great deal!
  • The development of National FFA Officers
    • Perhaps Blaze can comment on this blog and provide more insight. Feel free to email him and ask!
  • Can/Does Chapter Officer Selection involve outside adults with no FFA Background?
    • Absolutely, great way to involve partners in what you are doing as a program
  • How to make a good officer contract?
    • Look at examples and ask on NAAE CoP!
  • Developing the skills of younger members in the organization when currently no program exists to do that.
    • I do not understand the statement. There are programs at both the State and National level designed to develop leadership skills of young members.
  • Why does Texas FFA have so many vice-presidents?
    • They have over 60,000 members. Each area has a State Officer who is a State Vice President (there are 10 areas). From that group, a State President is selected
  • How do you use student delegates as part of the nominating committee?
    • Maybe you have one student from each grade level and a senior outgoing officer on the committee
  • Should the nominating committee go through an orientation before starting?
    • Absolutely! Provide education to ensure success
  • Should you provide the candidates a training session about how to navigate the nom com?
    • Great idea! anything we can do to bolster the educational component.
  • How do you handle the budgeting piece on an officer application?
    • I do not understand the question. If you are going to require students invest an amount of money to be an officer, be transparent and up front with it on the application.
  • Should you allow candidates to choose what office they want?
    • It depends on the situation, but usually yes.
  • I want to learn more about how to balance teaching everyday and balancing being an FFA advisor.
    • They are one and the same, indistinguishable from each other. FFA is a part of the curriculum. It is all part of the job.
  • I have heard about FFA Around the World, waht does 4H look like around the world?
  • Question for Blaze: Should Officers serve as committee chairs?
    • Depends, I say no, but will let Blaze respond in comments

    • The Pennsylvania FFA Board of Directors is drafting a Frequently Asked Questions Letter. When it comes across the list serv, I will forward it to the AEE 311 class.
  • FFA from a classroom stand point. How can I get even the most stubborn student to join my chapter?
    • How do you get a stubborn student to do Math Homework? FFA is the laboratory of leadership development in agricultural education. Membership can be "optional", but involvement is not.
  • Can I use my time as a Learning Group Leader (LGL) for Outdoor school towards my 80 hours even after counting other hours as a counselor?

  • Why does not every state have a chaplain? Why are states getting rid of the thought of prayer?
    • I do not think they are getting rid of the thought of prayer or moments of reflections, but I think they are recognizing that it is VERY difficult to prepare students to be respectful of all religions and backgrounds. Remember, there is the separation of church and state. For example, if you are praying at a meeting and the student close's with the phrase, "In Christ's name", how would that make a potential Jewish or Muslim student feel welcome?

To address the Ticket Outs from Session 3:

    What are we curious about?
    • How to get chapter officers to "want" to do a POA?
      • I think structure goes a long way, hopefully the 7th class session on September 17th and the 9th & 10th class sessions the week of September 24th will help. Be sure to ask that question of our guest speakers.
    • What will I record in AET? How does AET work?
      • It can really be anything! Maybe start with "hours studying!" We just want you to play with the program
    • ACES and SLLC
      • Both are Statewide FFA Conferences in the Spring. Student teachers are provided funding to attend one with their chapter. Other opportunities exist to help with Penn State Teach Ag!
    • For the web wonder where we are making Trivia Questions, do you want a formal APA citation or just the site/book and page number?
      • The site/book and page number will suffice
    • I am curious to why some schools with Ag Ed Programs still do not have FFA. What are their reasons?
      • They probably would site many, I would indicate a mis-communication or lack of understanding of how to use the powerful student development tool of a Career & Technical Student Organization (CTSO)
    • For Small FFA Chapter like mine back home, how else can they get money to support their program?
      • To know how else, we would need to know what they are doing currently. Creative ways abound! What we find is, when a school values something, they find a way. Examples can be:
    • FFA Chapter Meetings
    • How do you get students involved in FFA?
      • A well structured POA that shows opportunity for involvement can go a long way! We will also discuss recruitment and retention in our 27th session on December 3rd
    • Creating FFA Chapters in places that do no think they need them
      • The key is to avoid acronyms and jargon when sharing about opportunities. Talk in a language that appeals to the audience.
    • What time would we leave for the Trip to the BIG E in Springfield Mass?
      • I believe 5:00am on Friday, Sept 13 and return Sunday Evening
    • Is the AET program the one we are supposed to record something in every week about anything we choose?
      • Yes
    • I am wondering why we had such a "crappy" FFA chapter at my high school.
      • So much really depends on the FFA Advisor/Ag Teacher framing the opportunities and reaching students.
    • I am curious about which of the 10 components of a successful FFA Chapter is usually the weakest.
      • Suppose it just depends on the situation!
    • How does an Ag Program lose their Charter?
      • They do not pay dues, do not offer ag education classes or do not have an ag teacher.
    • Is it common for Ag Programs to now allow for College Placement/Advanced Placement students to be involved?
      • No. Some programs offer AP courses. Many programs have a great deal of students in this description.
    • How could a school with an Ag Program Charter an FFA Chapter?
    What did you learn?
    • 10 Essential Elements of an FFA Chapter, including:
      1. Constitution and Bylaws
      2. Diversity of Membership
      3. Program of Activities
      4. Capable Officers
      5. FFA Knowledge
      6. Adequate Financing
      7. School & Community Support
      8. Sharing Responsibilities
      9. Proper Equipment & Records
      10. Regularly Held, planned Chapter Meetings
    • How much Ag Ed does Youth Development!
    • The bonuses w/ affiliate FFA Membership/About FFA Affiliate Membership
    • There are a lot of great ideas that arise from this class that I hope to put all together to one day create a dynamic program.
    • 100% FFA Membership in Ag Ed Classrooms!
      • Remember, as an advisor you can create two levels of membership. General Membership and Active Membership with different rights for each.
    • SLLC is unique to PA!
    • You need to break the POA into three divisions (Student, Chapter, Community) and you have committees in each of those divisions to accomplish things!
    • I learned that as much as I would like to think a community will be able to make a successful program, in the end, it is the advisor that can make or break the situation.
What do you want to learn more about?
    • AET!!
    • Steps to become a State FFA Officer
    • What does it mean to have capable officers? In your opinion.
      • In my opinion that means three things:
        • Officers who know what their job is.
        • Officers who have been provided the training to do their job.
        • Officers who have the motivation to do their job right.
    • I want to learn more about how Ag Teachers balance the FFA with their everyday classes
      • Don't forget integrated. Often times, FFA becomes a part of your curriculum and lesson.
      • You do not have to do it all..remember, a buffet
      • You develop student leaders who take ownership
      • You utilize community members and booster clubs
    • POA's! (Program of Activities), I have never had the experience of using a POA!
      • No worries, the 9th class session on September 24th and the 10th class session on September 26th will go a long ways to helping you!
    • Opportunities to be involved with activities and conferences of the FFA
      • Keep your eye on that Tuesday Teach Ag Email Blast!
    • The FFA Affliliate Membership Program
    • The FFA Advisor's role
      • The next class session will help!
    • I would like to learn more about lesson plans and how to develop them!
      • You will pick up some very basics in AEE 100 and go in depth in AEE 412!
    • What are the "descriptions" of the officers positions? Do their jobs vary from chapter to chapter?
    • I need to read more and learn more about the FFA
      • Well, the student handbook and official manual you were provided will go a long way in helping with this!!
    • Moodle Modules: Will we go over what is on the assignments or is it all self-paced online learning?
      • It is all self-paced online learning. Go Get em!
    • I want to learn more about starting up a new FFA Chapter.
    • What needs to be in a meeting agenda to make it a success?
    • AET: I signed in as a student and I wanted to do mine on research, but a lot of the tabs were about expenses. How do I gear it about research that does not involve $$?
