More on AET (New to PA!)

The following message was shared today with the Pennslyvania Ag Teachers! I thought it might be helpful to you as well.

Dr. Hanagriff will be guest speaking in our class on November 12th.

Dear Agricultural Education Teachers,

Each of you have access to The Agricultural Experience Tracker or commonly called the The AET.  This program is utilized by 42 states and over 300,000 students to offer a unique record book solution to agricultural education students and teachers.  We are excited that your state has joined AET.  In 2012-13 school year, we had over 2,500 PA student accounts from 21% of your programs, so we are excited to serve your entire state.
New features for AET this year include
  • AET Badges, to reward students with outstanding nationally ranked records,
  • a new process for teachers to review student records and rank students eligible for awards,
  • a new process for teachers/student to collaborate in their AET calendar and then export those details directly into NFFA's National Chapter Award.
  • new AET web features, where you can develop your AET and have the details you control shared on your own website hosted by The AET.
  • plus...many more.
Teachers can access The AET by going to our site (www.theaet.com) and selecting the "Teacher" sign in.  Your chapter state and number (PAXXXX) serve as your chapter and password log in (Make sure to use upper case PA or your current password if you are already a user).  You can follow our "Teachers Help" area to learn more or follow this short "Getting Started Guide for Teacher link here" - http://learn.theaet.com/F/learn/8-22-2013%20Teachers%20Getting%20Started%20Guide.pdf
You can change your password in the system.

Using this system allows you to:
1.     Develop a chapter calendar/POA that allows students to help you develop events and report results,
2.     Quickly develop student accounts from FFA membership or import your class roster
3.     Capture chapter pictures to enhance your program's POA
4.     Develop a free chapter website that promotes your program and informs parents and others of chapter activities
5.     and a host of other features and reports that track your program's successes

Student using this system can:
1.     Complete a student profile that assist in developing their FFA AgCN profile
2.     Develop and track all types of SAEs
3.     Follows correct accounting methods and assist in managing inventory values to eliminate award errors
4.     Track their time in the classroom, FFA and Community Service Activities
5.     Apply for all state and national FFA awards using their records from AET....automatically delivering error free awards

Student can learn how to get started -

AET also offers educational resources to help in the classroom and we hope assist you in your efforts.  If you need assistance, please email our help line or myself. Thanks

Roger

Active FFA Membership Poem (Do you just belong?)

As a teacher, how are you helping your students find a way to engage?
Do you just belong?
Are you an active member,
the kind that wouldn’t be missed?
Or are you just content
to have your name among the list?
Do you attend the meetings
and mingle with the flock?
Or do you usually stay away
and criticize and knock?

Do you take an active part,
to help and work along?
Or are you satisfied
to be the kind that just belongs?
Do you pitch in, and do you share,
to really make things tick?
Or leave the work to just a few,
that you would call “the clique?”

There’s quite a program scheduled
that we’re sure you’ve heard about,
and we’ll appreciate it if you too,
will help us work things out.
So come to the meetings often,
and help with hand and heart.

Don’t just be a member,
but take an active part.
Think this over, friend,
because you know right from wrong,
Are you an “ACTIVE MEMBER”,
or do you just belong?

[Thank you to Allison Hoover, 2014 Student Teacher, for finding this in the Firebaugh FFA POA.]

49-2 Mandates: Moodle Module

The Pennsylvania Department of Education passed the modifications to 49-2 Teacher Certification on September 22, 2007 requiring all instructional and educational specialist preparation programs to include the following by January 1, 2011 [Read More Here: 49-2 Mandate for Students with Special Needs & ELL]
  1. At least 9 credits or 270 hours regarding accommodations and adaptations for students with disabilities in an inclusive setting (instruction in literacy skills development and cognitive skill development for students with disabilities must be included); and
  2. At least 3 credits or 90 hours regarding the instructional needs of English language learners. (22 PA Code, Chapter 49, §49.13(b) (relating to policies)).
To achieve these mandates without increasing the course credit requirements for agricultural teacher education candidates (thus ensuring a timely graduation), the PSU TeachAG! program opted to utilize WFED 413 for 3 credits and to integrate competency based modules into existing AEE teacher preparation courses.

Moodle Modules are integrated into the following AEE Courses:
  • AEE 100
  • AEE 295
  • AEE 311
  • AEE 412
  • AEE 413
  • AEE 495
To assist you in completing these, there is are 49-2 Instructional Coaches who are certified teachers in ESL/ELL and Special Needs. They would LOVE to talk/assist and help you.

  3.  ·     Ms. Debra Herman, Instructor, dxh271@psu.edu; Keller Building 409
To complete the PDE 49-2 mandate, course materials for select assignments will be accessed and uploaded to: http://psucteonline.mrooms2.net/.

You should have a student account created at the above link. The default password is moodle123+. You will have to change the password upon logging in for the first time.

If you have difficulty logging in, please contact  Thomas Hunt (tah258@psu.edu)

Welcome to AEE 311!

Welcome to AEE 311!

The agricultural industry is in a period of revolution; it will never be the same again. Few individuals have a clear picture of exactly the extent to which change is taking place and even a less clear picture of where the industry will be in a quarter of a century. Change is everywhere in agriculture, and agricultural education must keep pace. Recent changes in the focus of agriculture education have created a need to stay abreast of the impact these changes will have on classroom instruction, supervised agriculture experience programs (SAE), and the youth organization The National FFA Organization.

Regardless of past experiences any of us may have had with The National FFA Organization, the magnitude of change effecting this youth organization requires us to take a close look and to examine the recently developed opportunities available to agricultural educators and students alike. The primary vision for the future of secondary agricultural education has been articulated by a shift from vocational agriculture to agriculture science and business (see Understanding Agricultural: New Directions for Education, 1988, National Academy of Sciences; and A New Era in Agriculture, (1998) The National FFA Foundation). Certification requirements have also been changed at the Department of Education resulting in a market-driven agricultural education program.

Currently, the shortage of qualified teachers and inadequate tools and facilities hamper the development of quality secondary programs. At present a significant number of undergraduates have not participated in a high school agricultural youth organization. Agricultural leadership organizations and programs provide vehicles for expanding and enriching the opportunities for participants to develop personal qualities, leadership abilities, occupational skills, and other capabilities that will enhance their ability to direct the agricultural industry more efficiently.

Leadership development instruction and activities need to be provided to all agricultural education majors to better prepare them to meet community needs. This course is for upper division students in agricultural education prior to their student teaching during spring semester.  Leadership development instruction and activities related to the FFA organization in agriculture will result in educational benefits to students, faculty and staff.

This blog will allow for the response to questions posed on the daily ticket out from each class session. Feel free to post questions, comments for additional instruction.

Penn State's ANGEL (https://cms.psu.edu) will be the digital home of AEE 100 where course materials are shared.

We will have fun this semester!
