Session 20- Reviewing AET

For our 20th session, Dr. Roger Hanagriff, creator of AET, joined us for the second time to address specific questions we had about using AET.  Dr. Hanagriff gave some great answers and provided us with the links for accessing the mobile AET site, which are included below:

What are you curious about?

  • More ways to grade student SAE's
    • Dr. Hanagriff showed us some great ways to review student data in many ways, as well as informed us that a grading rubric is on the way.  Check out the recording of the class session for Dr. Hanagriff's tips for grading.
  • SAE grant reviews
    • Keep your eye out for an email about attending the Adobe Connect training session that will likely occur this week or next!
  • What the Teacher version of AET looks like
    • Check it out!  Username: PSU  Password: psu
  • Can students keep records on classroom activities?
    • There is an option for students to list class activities in their experiences
  • Can AET be used for classes that are not Ag-related?
    • Students should keep track of outside activities for things like community service hours, etc. but AET is focused on Agricultural Education courses
  • Why is the mobile site difficult to get to?
    • It was before but it is no longer!  Dr. Hanagriff provided us with two links to assist in finding the mobile site!  Find them below!
  • Developing an SAE on AET
    • Continue to play with your AET account and the teacher account.  Utilize the list in your handbook of Top 10 items to complete on AET and don't forget to utilize any of the TA's!
  • Can we play with AET on the Teacher's version?
    • Absolutely!  The log-in information is listed above.
What did you learn?
  • AET sweetness!
  • Using the map feature to locate students' SAE's
  • Using AET as a teacher
  • How to view students' records, as well as grade them
What do you want to learn more about?
  • Exploring the POA tools on AET
  • The teacher side of AET
    • Check it out with the log-in info above!
  • SAE Grant Review process
    • Keep your eye out for the email mentioned above
  • Can we access the teacher version of AET as a student teacher?

Session Five: Where did it all begin?

While I wasn't present this morning, it looked like an AWESOME session! Way to rock out the quiz bowl. Check out below for responses to unanswered questions following session 5!

What are we curious about?

  • Does it look like AET will become a national standard?
    • I hope Dr. Foster chimes in on this one! But given that many states are going to affiliate membership and in turn with affiliate memberships comes an AET subscription, yes.
  • More on the NFA
    • We'll get this on Thursday with Dr. Bagget! Come with prepared with questions!
  • Online lesson plans like the ones on leadership and other areas?
  • National FFA Convention
    • Dr. Foster should be sending out an email here soon! If you have more pressing questions, contact your fellow classmates Janae Herr and Stacia Creed!
  • What are other fun ways to provide information to students?
    • You'll learn more about this in AEE 412, but for now here are some sweet links I use as a resource when lesson planning!
  • Will FFA and all of the associated programs ever make sense? Having no ag ed or FFA background, I find it all very confusing.
    • A wonderful and fellow 2015 cohort member Carly-Jean Schaefer has previously expressed the exact same sentiments to me when starting out in AEE. Now as we prepare to embark on our student teaching journey, Carly-Jean has grown leaps and bounds in her knowledge. She "drank the Kool-Aid" as I like to call her. Her email is cjs5582@psu.edu, feel free to reach out, I am sure she would be happy to help!
What did we learn?

  • Why the 33 delegates were in Kansas City, Missouri for the first FFA convention
  • More about ag ed
  • National FFA website has lesson plans
  • Resource to find standards that we should be meeting as ag teachers
  • National Standards for Ag Programs
  • How to implement a fun way to learn classroom material
  • Quiz bowls are awesome!
What do we want to learn more about?
  • When a program is audited by the state are they held to the NQPS?
    • Pennsylvania actually has their own program approval standards. You can find them here
  • Getting more diversity in the classroom?
    • We will be learning a lot more about this in sesssion 11, but for now check out the diversity inclusion section of the National FFA Website
  • How the FFA and NFA merged
    • Save this question for Thursday! :)
  • Who are other prominent figures in the ag ed community?
  • Are there quiz bowl FFA questions already made online?
    • Well even if there were...having students look for the quiz bowl questions allows for additional learning for students and prepares them to answer the questions correctly.
  • What AET looks like from the teacher side?
    • All four TAs have teacher access, stop one of us in the beginning of class and we can let you take a peek!
  • What would a typical day be like an ag teacher?
    • The National Teach Ag Campaign has a great blog about this, check it out!
Peace out Girl Scouts, see ya Thursday!

Session Two: What are professional expectations?

After a great second session, we left class today equipped with the challenge of pushing ourselves and our students to ask the question "why?" and remain conscious of the status quo. Additionally, we identified reasons that we join organizations, mapped out the remainder of the course, and last but not least started our journey with AET! Let's challenge ourselves to use AET to it's fullest potential, feel free to contact any of us for fun ideas!

Ticket Out Responses Session 2:

  • What are we curious about?
    • Managing multiple project books in AET
      • Under "journal" at the top of the page after logging in,  click "develop your AET experiences" and then "add new." Once your experience is added, you can continue to enter more projects this way.
    • How to use the POA to recruit and retain students
      • When developing your POA implementation plan, one way to use it as a recruitment tool is to develop your standing committees in a way that is fun and inciting! For example, my implementation plan had very goofy name for each committee. Hold onto this question for our two sessions on POA. If you would like to take a look at my project, let me know!
    • If we develop that competition and championship attitude, how can we also cultivate an "other focused mentality"
      • Holy cow, this is a good question. I am hoping that Dr. Foster adds this thoughts to this one in the comments, but I would be happy to offer my personal feelings. If you are creating that "championship" mindset, why can't that include being champions of giving back?
    • Why is adolescence viewed negatively?
    • How do you keep everyone involved in an organization?
      • We have a session dedicated to this in Decemeber!
    • Exploring the AET Website and my SAE journal
      • Make sure you check out the list provided in your assignment handbook to get a feeling of where to start!
    • AET Chapter website
      • This is available more so on the advisor features. Personally, I am hoping to get a feel for this as well. I should be people to add students for access to play around with the website. Any students who are interested, please contact me.
    •  Percentage of schools that use AET for record keeping.
      • I do not know if this number exists, but I can tell you that all states that have affiliation membership for ag education (meaning ALL ag ed students are also FFA members) have access to AET, including Pennsylvania.
  • What did we learn?
    • There is a lot more to AET than recordbooks!
    • Info about AET
    • I learned why students want to join an organization
    • Academically you are considered an adolescent between 11-21 years old
    • How to use AET more efficiently
    • AET is awesome
  • What do we want to learn more about?
    • FFA
      • While we will be discussing this in 311, I think that AEE 100 might offer a lot more of what you are looking for. Check that out if you aren't already in the class!
    • Teacher/FFA website
      • See my response above. Once I play around with it, I should be able to start adding students who are interested in contributing
    • Recruitment tools for organizations
      • We have a session on this in December! But keep this in mind while planning out the four projects. What pieces can you add that make students want to be a part of it?
    • Using the AET calendar for class due dates
      • I can definitely add these in! :)

Session 21 - The AET

What are you curious about?
There is a lot to learn. I hope that I can be prepared to teach this. Are there workshops to get involved in?

  • As a new/beginning teacher, you are provided with in-service training opportunities through the Center for Professional Personnel Development, which is housed in the Penn State agricultural education program. You (teachers) are asked every other year for input on what workshops they want. If teachers provide us with this information, we will make the workshops/professional development happen!
Is there a limit on how long a project can be on SAE (years)?
  • The answer is yes. However, the length may vary somewhat, depending on when an individual enters agricultural education. The student would begin their SAE when they begin agricultural education, and then they could/would carry it through their senior year and beyond to help with the American degree.
Is there a chance there will be a full mobile app. coming?

  •           We have developed a mobile webpage version over a full mobile app that needs development on both IOS and Android…so for now the idea is to offer the mobile site version to help students and teachers have access to key use areas of AET on either operating system…although seems to work better on Apple products.  The site is also designed well to work on tablets and Ipads as the complete site.
I want to explore some of my options with my "fake" project that I developed?
  • Just log in and start filling in information. The deeper you get into the system, the better you will understand it, and when you encounter a problem there are people, like Roger, available to help.
I am curious about how much input student/teachers have on improving the AET system?
  • From discussion/presentation by Roger, their team is very open to making changes based on the needs of the teachers/students. If they believe it is feasible, and people need it, they incorporate it into the system. I have found them to be very open to suggestions.
Can a teacher review a student’s picture before it is posted? Remove it is some way, if it is not appropriate?
  •           Yes, teachers portfolio has a chapter level….then one for each student.  Also, the website that teachers can develop as part of AET can showcase student pictures as well as chapter pictures…but using the “manage website” menu in AET, teachers have to select them to show on the website.  Basically, the pictures cannot go beyond a student portfolio unless the teachers chooses them.

How long after graduation do students have access to AET?
  •           The teacher in their program can keep them active as long as they need to, so really no cutoff.  It can interfere with their FFA roster, so that is usually when they decide to make them inactive.

I want to know more about the Futures conference in Texas.
  •           I do workshops all over, but in Texas they have been managed from summer conference to region service centers (Education centers)

How many people actually designed AET?
  •           Small group of us, 3 designed the system. For me, it was a compilation of 10 years in assisting teachers with using the 3 systems that existed in Texas.

Can you carry projects over by just picking them up or how would you pick that up?
  •           Not sure on this one….do you mean carry over projects for several years? If yes, projects are considered ongoing until the student makes them “inactive”  that is the green “on button” in the Experience Manager System”  Once a project is inactive, still goes into awards and reports…but no new entries can come in and the inventory is removed as current.

If a student continues their project from year 1 to year 2, will the numbers (inventory for example) automatically load for the year two book?
  •           Same idea as previous, the AET has no beginning and ending year….the program calculates values ending and then automatically uses that as beginning….any entries made in previous years will flow to all subsequent years.

How do I complete my profile? It says it is only 40% complete… what am I missing? Is there something that is typically missed here?
  •          That calculation is based on simple data such as email, address, gender, parent contact, enrolled in one course, etc….

Judging cards on AET… can you explain more?
  •           This was to help students develop a resume and potentially see their results from judging events…if they use Judging Card.  Most activities in AET are records based and the idea is a student records they attended a CDE contest, so we record that as a journal.  The resume was designed to allow students to record in their profile…they placed 1st in a CDE in 2013…so that is extra information we previously did not have.  Having a link to judging card just helps those students review how they placed….then enter the details in the best manner to show in their resume.

  •           The resume is one I mean to review…but basically it brings in parts of AET that we have data on….participation in classes, SAEs, CDE contest, committee/officer leadership and community service…then let them add in their accomplishments to then create a MS Word based report they can edit and alter in more detail….but is not bad as it is.

When do you teach SAE/recordkeeping?
  • Short answer... continually :-) You would want to introduce it early in the new school year, with introductory courses, and maybe a bit later in the school year (still in the first marking period) with your upper-class men.
What percentage of teachers across the nation use AET?
  • I am not sure of the exact percentage, but I can attest that I have seen a huge amount of growth across the nation in the past 2 years, and I have not even been looking for it!
Was AET developed by FFA, or just adopted by FFA?
  • AET was not developed by FFA, but rather Roger and his group. They were looking for a way to make recordkeeping more up-to-date/real-life. The AET is modeled on systems that businesses currently use for their records.
How do I learn to do all of this before I begin teaching?
  • The best teacher is experience... You need to practice with it now, but you will learn most of your AET "lessons" by helping real students in real-time; thus,  you cannot learn it all before you teach.
Do our accounts go away after we are done with AEE 311?
  • Yes, but you will get another one when you begin teaching.
What did you learn?
I enjoyed learning about the teacher side of AET.
Breeding herd manager! (Super cool)
I like the SAE reports and how it can be used for grading.
Inventory
Capital investments
That students can be granted partial access for certain areas of the AET
That there are lots of applications/awards linked to the AET
A ton!
That you must have a placement experience to enter a paycheck
AET is pretty awesome!
How to better navigate the AET site
Transfer stock
That I should put my lab job into AET and the complete report is really cool
I need to create projects in each area, if I really want to understand how they work

What do you want to learn more about?
How involved do students need to get in AET?
  • At a minimum they need to keep their profiles up-to-date and they need to enter their journal and financial records. However, once they get on to how the system works, I believe you will have trouble "stopping" them. They will use this as their personal agricultural education "clearinghouse" where they will keep track of all of their program needs.
I just need to continue to explore what it has to offer.
  • I agree! We all need to continue to learn/explore!
SAE grants. It would be cool to see examples.

Do you submit applications on-line or print and submit?
  • You print and submit the Keystone, for example.
Determining which category SAEs fall under? Can they fall under more than one?
  • You do need to choose a category to place them under. Honestly, I never had a problem with this, but I did see Roger's point this morning about the mechanic example and the 1099.
Why is my profile only 40% complete?
  • You need to make sure that you are entering all of the information requested under "profile"... parent names, your address, email address, etc. for it to show that you are 100% complete.

Session 20 - Follow-up to degrees and proficiency awards (KIVA)

What are you curious about?
What was the answer to project versus program?

  • A project is a singular project (research project, animal, etc.), and a program is the complete package of taking the projects that students complete and make it a more comprehensive SAE.
New assignment/changed assignment?
  • Look for an email describing where to find the information on the changed assignment.
More on AET?
  • Coming next week!
Could requiring an SAE make a student not want to take Ag?
  • Yes, and that is o.k. If a student loves soccer, but doesn't want to be on defense at times, then they don't play/join, because even if you are a striker you better be willing to be part of the entire program/game.
How many PA ag. teachers complete SAE visits?
  • The ones that understand how it helps a student develop make the time to do this important aspect of the program.
Will I be able to find all of the degrees on the FFA page?
  • You should be able to do this, but it not, please feel free to talk with classmates and/or the instructors!
How do students process starting a new SAE?
  • You as the advisor need to work with the student to find out their interests and abilities at that point in their education. You then work with them to develop beyond that point, using the SAE program.
What did you learn?
Program versus project
More about SAE
You can get a free pin from National FFA
New assignment sounds AWESOME
Proficiency awards
That I need to connect my curriculum and SAE
SAE and record keeping are critical to teach in my classes
KIVA
Kolb's model, again

What do you want to learn more about?
Can I use my students' interest to shape my curriculum?
  • I believe that you can definitely do this. You will also use other factors in determining the curriculum (community needs, career and college readiness, approved program status with the state/type of program, etc.). You will learn a lot more about this in AEE 413.
AET
  • Stay tuned! See you on Tuesday :-)
How many FFA students are active in sports?
  • I was a three sport letterman... little known fact :-)
  • I also heard at National FFA convention that a school in Missouri had to postpone their championship football game, because too many of the football team members were at National FFA Convention!!
How to incorporate others into helping with SAE's.
  • Find experts in  your community and ask them to help. One point of clarification... these folks would be serving as volunteers for your school district; thus, they would need their proper clearances/fingerprints checked prior to working with the students. Be sure to work with administration on the proper procedures for your district!

Session 19 - Degrees and Proficiencies

What are you curious about?
How do you want us to format the CDE assignment?
  • You can format the answers in any way that you prefer, as long as they are within the guidelines of the assignment. You want your answers to be easy to follow, but otherwise just follow the rubric.
Will there be a workshop like last year for people that want to apply for the American Degree?
  • I talked with Mr. Day and Mr. Keith following class, and they are both willing to come up and help again, as long as the students contact them in advance/get on their calendars. Keep in mind that you will want to have your records with you at this meeting, as it will help them answer your questions.
Would including a session on degrees/proficiencies be beneficial in my classroom?
  • Yes, you want to inform your students of the opportunities available to them, and degrees/proficiencies are an important part of agricultural education.
Does the order go... proficiency award, Keystone degree, American degree?
  • Not exactly... proficiencies and degrees are not "combined". You earn your degrees in "order" from Greenhand to Chapter to State (called the Keystone in PA) to American degree. Proficiencies are applied for as an award above and beyond the degree.
Should the early steps in completing degrees/awards be done on paper or electronically?
  • I think this is personal preference. However, I do believe that with our capability to save and edit in electronic format, it just makes sense to go electronic.
Where do you find the number of applicants for different proficiency awards?
  • This would be data that folks at the state FFA office would have for the state level, and National FFA would have for the history on national applicants.
Understanding record books to the point where I can teach it to our future students.
  • We will have a few sessions on this topic in the near future. Keep in mind what Kevin Keith said in class yesterday... It comes with experience. You are not an expert, immediately!
Can one SAE be used to apply for multiple proficiency awards?
  • If you have multiple projects, then you could be looking at multiple proficiency areas. However, keep in mind what Mr. Keith said in terms of SAE programs versus a "project book".
Ag Career Network
  • I believe this will be one of our discussion topics later in the semester, as a few people have shown interest in the topic.
Should you take students to convention every year, or every other year?
  • What are your reasons/learning objectives for going? I personally think that you should go every year, if you can clearly identify the reason for going. With that being said, you will need to work closely with administration to make certain that funding/support is there from the district. It all comes back to providing opportunities to the students, and being clear with administration how this will help students.
How hard is it to actually work through the qualifications for the degree?
  • It is not too difficult if you give these to students early in their program. Don't wait until the very end and tell  the students that this is what they had to do over the past 3 or 4 years, and then have them try to make it up. They need to know the criteria for earning the degree up front and then they can make a conscious effort to obtain the degree.
What did you learn?
Resources - where to find the applications on the website/the process of scoring the students
Great tips!!! Thank you to the presenters!
That you can apply for multiple proficiencies at the same time.
That many proficiency areas are not applied for/not highly represented. More opportunity for my students to apply at the state level!!!
Proficiencies are a "summary" of your SAE programs.
Start early on the applications
Call for help if you need it. They are willing to help.
Ag Career Network has student surveys to help determine possible SAE areas for students.
Record keeping is "key"... do it early... do it well.
That there are a lot of proficiency areas that I never knew about.
That degrees can be applied for even after graduation.
$1,000 requirement
AET helps with parts of filling out the American degree
The applications are not really that hard if you plan/help your students plan in advance
That examples of winning applications are available on-line.

What do you want to learn more about?
Is AET replacing record books?
  • Currently, in PA, the record book competition uses the state approved books. However, many schools are seeing the advantages of the AET and are moving in that direction.
How to create a proper/effective grading system for the program (SAE/FFA/classroom)?

How many students win the American degree each year?
  • This year... approximately 3,500 on the national level and approximately 75 from the state.
I want to learn more about recordbooks (other than employment) so that I can help my students.
  • We will have a few sessions on record keeping. Also, I would recommend "starting" an entrepreneurship book on AET this semester so that Dr. Foster and I can help answer questions, as you go along in the process of entering information.
I want to learn more about the Stars.
How do H.S. students do all of this in agricultural education and have time for anything else?
  • Ag students are amazing :-) I think they need to be passionate about what they are doing, and they need to have an agricultural education teacher that is willing to help them. The rest seems to "fall into place".
Workshops available to learn record books?
  • New and beginning teachers get a survey each year in PA asking about their needs. Please be sure to complete this when you get to this stage in your career. Also, we can explore other sessions beyond what we have in AEE 311, if this is of interest to a group of students. This  may be a great opportunity for Teach Ag Society and Collegiate FFA to partner on an "extended learning" opportunity for our students. I would encourage you to contact the officers of both organizations and provide them with this idea for professional development! I will buy the dinner, if people get it organized/attend!
Are there internships available through PA FFA in the summer?
  • Not that I know of, but depending on what you are looking for we can team you up with Mr. Brammer, Cliff Day, others??? that would very likely be happy to work with you.
How many proficiencies are there?
  • Forty-nine
How do I incorporate all of these different proficiencies into my curriculum?
  • You do not need to incorporate them all into your curriculum. You develop your curriculum and then, in conjunction with your students' SAE programs, you determine which proficiencies align with your program/students.

Session 14 - Inclusion follow-up

What are you curious about?
Are the due dates on the moodle modules suggested dates, or real deadlines? Can I complete them over Thanksgiving Break?

  • You will want to email Deb Herman at dxh271@psu.edu to get the specifics on deadlines, and stick to what she indicates are the deadlines on the moodle modules.
CDE
  • I never heard of it until this year. I am excited to learn more.
Is it expected that we log into AET to enter information every week?
  • I would think that you could find something to enter each week. Don't make this a stressful activity, but you do need to be able to navigate the pages, and understand how AET is designed.
Do all pre-service teachers have to take classes like WF ED and complete moodle modules?
  • All pre-service teachers in the state of PA need to complete 9 credits in working with special needs learners and 3 credits of ESL/ELL coursework. Thus, not all students need to complete moodle modules; however, they do take an additional 3 courses compared to our students.
Do the teachers we contact need to be from cooperating centers?
  • No. It can be any teacher in the state.
What will CDE plans include?
  • Check out the rubric. There is a lot of information there. Also, check out the example provided in class.
How many chapters are this prepared with POA, CDE plan, etc.? I know mine was not.
  • Each chapter has various levels of preparation, but those that are serious about completing these items are often well prepared to serve their students.
At National Convention is there going to be the "Native Celebration"?
What resources does National FFA offer to teachers?
How to contact teachers?
  • You can access the teachers' email and phone numbers through the PA Agricultural Education Directory at http://go.cas.psu.edu/paaged/ You will need to create an account, but it only takes 2 minutes.
What CDEs are offered?
What did you learn?
Tips for inclusion
About CDE manuals
AET login expectations
CDE- massive packets for each event!
That scent-free policy is real
CDEs and inclusion tips (there are a lot of ways to include students into your program)

What do you want to learn more about?
If teachers actually create CDE plans?
  • They may not all create CDE plans to the extent that we are requiring, but if they do they will be the best prepared to help train their teams. It would require them to really think about how/why they have students do something related to a particular CDE.
Contacting Teachers about the plans.
  • See above for the location of the PA Ag. Teacher Directory
How to train a CDE team.

CDEs

How to do the CDE assignment.

Things that I can do on AET tracker.
  • The best advice I can give here is... get on and test it out. Don't worry about "messing" something up. This is for you to get experience with the system.
How to deal with students with behavior disabilities.
  • I think this comes with experience, but don't forget to rely heavily on the special education teacher and the IEP, as they can help guide you on what to expect and how to properly handle with the least disruption to your class and other students.
Learning more about CDEs and can you use them as a guide for your units/classes?
  • There is nothing wrong with teaching content related to the CDEs. If there wasn't overlap it wouldn't make sense to have the CDE and/or the class content. HOWEVER, you do not "teach to the CDE". If you only teach what the CDE requires, then you are not giving you students opportunities to explore beyond whatever the CDE "permits".
About all of the different CDEs available.
  • See above for the link to the CDE manual from National FFA.
There is a lot of events in the CDE. Does a student need to do something in each category?
  • I would have to look at what you are specifically referring to here, but yes the students must complete many different tasks for each CDE. This typically includes written examinations, as well as several opportunities for application of content.
How to produce an interest in students to complete the CDE.
  • This is where it is important to work with students and motivate them to participate on an individual basis. Also, through your classes you can provide students with examples of past success. There are both extrinsic and intrinsic motivators that you can utilize to get students to participate.

More on AET (New to PA!)

The following message was shared today with the Pennslyvania Ag Teachers! I thought it might be helpful to you as well.

Dr. Hanagriff will be guest speaking in our class on November 12th.

Dear Agricultural Education Teachers,

Each of you have access to The Agricultural Experience Tracker or commonly called the The AET.  This program is utilized by 42 states and over 300,000 students to offer a unique record book solution to agricultural education students and teachers.  We are excited that your state has joined AET.  In 2012-13 school year, we had over 2,500 PA student accounts from 21% of your programs, so we are excited to serve your entire state.
New features for AET this year include
  • AET Badges, to reward students with outstanding nationally ranked records,
  • a new process for teachers to review student records and rank students eligible for awards,
  • a new process for teachers/student to collaborate in their AET calendar and then export those details directly into NFFA's National Chapter Award.
